How does it work? Our sense of smell is the most primitive of all our senses. Scent acts many times as a memory trigger, recalling the "buried" or forgotten memories of our past. Additionally, our sense of smell acts as a body protection, alerting us to the presence of noxious and potentially dangerous scents. Aromatherapy works through two main routes: - the sense of smell (the olfactory sense) and - through skin penetration. Through scent, or when applied to the skin, the essential oils travel throughout the entire body, affecting the various body systems: nervous, circulatory, muscular, lymphatic and endocrine systems. Essential oils are used to treat an array of emotional disorders, organ disfunctions and skin problems through a variety of techniques, ranging from using essential oils through the olfactory system (the sense of smell), and/or applied externally. In european countries it is often taken internally under medical supervision. Aromatherapy includes principles of massage, diet, and an understanding of the psychological factors of illness. It is also utilized as a means to scent oneself or the environment in which we live. Many essential oils, when diffused into the air, will scent the room exquisitely , without fear of headaches or harmful side effects (unlike many commercial perfumes), providing the user with all the therapeutic benefits contained in those pure essential oils. |
